Stage 1

Intensive Deep Cleaning

The effectiveness of any disinfectant depends on the quality of the initial clean. Disinfectant should never be applied over heavy dirt, manure, dust or other organic material.

Our first stage includes:

  • Initial inspection and preparation of the work area
  • Protection or isolation of sensitive electrical equipment
  • Removal of remaining dust, feathers, cobwebs, feed and organic deposits
  • Dry cleaning of heavily contaminated areas
  • Pre-soaking of stubborn contamination
  • Application of a suitable agricultural detergent or foaming cleaner
  • Controlled high-pressure washing from high level downwards
  • Cleaning of ceilings, roof trusses, wall panels and internal surfaces
  • Cleaning around doors, edges, corners and floor joints
  • Cleaning of ventilation inlets, shutters and fan housings where safe
  • Cleaning of floors, drainage channels and accessible equipment
  • Final rinse and visual inspection

The poultry house is then allowed to drain and dry as required before disinfection begins.

Stage 2

Surface Disinfection

Once the building is visibly clean, a suitable poultry-environment disinfectant is applied to the agreed surfaces and equipment.

The product is selected according to the farm’s biosecurity requirements, veterinary instructions and the organisms being controlled. Where applicable, a Defra-approved disinfectant is used at the correct listed dilution.

This stage includes:

  • Accurate chemical dilution and preparation
  • Application across cleaned floors, walls and suitable internal surfaces
  • Treatment of accessible equipment and fixtures included within the scope
  • Attention to corners, joints, entrances and other higher-risk areas
  • Compliance with the manufacturer’s required coverage and contact time

  • Recording of the chemical and application rate used

Surfaces are given the required contact and drying time before the final treatment begins.

Stage 3

Terminal Fogging

Terminal fogging provides a final supplementary treatment after physical cleaning and surface disinfection have been completed.

Professional fogging equipment produces a controlled fine mist, helping distribute an approved fogging product throughout the empty poultry house and across suitable exposed surfaces.

Our fogging procedure includes:

  • Calculating the required treatment volume from the building’s cubic capacity
  • Using a product specifically authorised for the intended fogging application
  • Sealing and securing the treatment area where required
  • Controlled application throughout the poultry house
  • Maintaining the manufacturer’s specified exposure period

Does the poultry house need to be empty?
Yes. Birds must be removed before intensive cleaning, disinfection or fogging can begin. Litter, feed, mortalities and loose waste should also be removed unless included within our agreed scope.
What disinfectant will be used?
The disinfectant will be agreed according to the farm’s biosecurity plan, veterinary requirements and intended application. Products are mixed and applied strictly according to their approved label, dilution rate and contact time.
How long does the process take?
Timescales depend on the number and size of the poultry houses, contamination levels, equipment, drying time and available water and drainage. Following a survey, we will provide a planned programme and completion time.
Can you work to our existing farm protocol?

Is fogging a replacement for pressure washing and disinfection?

Suspected or confirmed notifiable disease situations must be reported and managed under APHA and veterinary instructions. Any specialist decontamination work would only proceed under the required official disease-control plan.
